Circuit of Culture: Representation

A short from a NSFW animator from Tumblr announcing their move to Newgrounds. It is SFW

Newgrounds' representation is defined by its slogan, "Everything for Everyone." It has been living up to the standard in recent years, but in its early years, Newgrounds had a different attitude. From the site's inception to 2006, the website's main slogan was, "The Problems of the Future Today." Early Newgrounds prided itself in the edginess attributed to it like a badge of honor; creator Tom Fulp made Pico's school a comedic game about a school shooting a year after Columbine that made the website notorious in mainstream news and parents everywhere. All the top viewed content in Newgrounds followed similar themes of edge and offensive humor. This "edginess" was the dominant culture on Newgrounds and is still true today. In 2006 the website slogan changed to "Everything by Everyone," and there was a bit of change in Newgrounds. There were many more games and animations that were being submitted to the site that didn't fit the stereotype; content dealing with serious issues such as mental illness and societal issues were being loved by the site and promoted. Unfortunately, in the late 2000s and early 2010s, the site was losing relevance.

The introduction of the smartphone and Steve Job's harsh words for Flash, calling it outdated and unsecure made things hard for Newgrounds. Smartphones don't run Flash that well or at all, and most talented individuals wanted to work on apps and not play around making flash creations. Flash was being seen as an outdated tool.

Luckily there have been multiple "revivals" of the website recently. A recent was in late 2018 when Tumblr, a popular social media site, began to ban and delete NSFW art and animations. These artists needed to find a new place to showcase their work, and Newgrounds was one of the popular alternatives these artists flocked to. Fulp staying true to the site's modern slogan, publicly welcomed the migrating artists and advertised Newgrounds as a haven for NSFW artists, promising them that the website is free from corporate meddling and free from censorship. That Newgrounds has always hosted NSFW content will forever do so. Even more so since recently Newgrounds went ad-free and is being sustained by contributions by its users. Newgrounds boasts that it is free from any corporate interests. These artists were from a website where its main userbase was a lot more progressive and politically correct. Amazingly, these migrating artists were able to fit in and coexist with the edgier main base of Newgrounds users. Now it is much more common than before to see art and animations from creators that promote social justice issues and LGBTQ positivity. Newgrounds recently really has been meeting that "Everything by Everyone" standard and that Newgrounds is ran by its users, but unfortunately, a stereotype overshadows it.

Today, when people hear Newgrounds, they think of the "Newgrounds Style," a stereotype formed by how the top animations and games recently are dominated by animators like OneyNg and Sexual Lobster whose creations, while well-animated, feature grossly designed characters in gross situations sprinkled with a bit of edge. These types of creators have big followings online and are pretty loud as well. Now when people hear of Newgrounds, people think that it is a site for immature edgelords, which is unfortunate because Newgrounds has never had such a diverse userbase and creators as it does right now.

With Flash nearing its "death" on December 31, 2020, due to Adobe and many popular internet browsers ending support to play flash creations, many fear that it would be gone forever. Fortunately, Newgrounds has been developing an in-house Flash player that will allow users to play most flash content on the website. Newgrounds has taken on the role of an internet archiver because a lot of the flash animations and games are hallmarks of the early internet, and it is a very admirable action to do.
